Story Behind The Scarf

The Hermès Chasse en Inde (Hunting in India) scarf, designed by Michel Duchene, was first released in 1986 to celebrate the "Year of India". It depicts a vibrant hunting scene inspired by a silk bed throw embroidered with gold thread from Benares, which was displayed in the dining room of the Indian Ambassador to France. The scarf features a central scene of animals and hunters in a jungle setting, surrounded by decorative borders with repetitive motifs. The central square of the scarf shows a hunting scene with various animals (tigers, gazelles, etc.) and hunters on horseback, elephants, and on foot. The surrounding borders feature repeated characters and animals, reminiscent of Indian block prints.
