Hunter S. Thompson, an American journalist, rose to fame as a legendary icon for his unconventional and countercultural lifestyle. Renowned for his significant contributions to American political writing, he is best recognized for his iconic book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," which later inspired a film starring Johnny Depp. Hunter's life was extraordinary, and many sought to emulate his unique experiences. From 2003 until his passing in 2005, Chloe Sells served as Hunter's personal assistant. This captivating new book combines Sells's photographs of Hunter's home, capturing the interior, his possessions, and handwritten notes. Additionally, Sells's recollections of her time working with Hunter are interwoven, providing a deeper insight into the man and his creative sanctuary.
To enhance the visual experience, some of Sells's hand-printed photographs have been overlain with traditional marbling techniques from Italy and Japan. This artistic technique creates a psychedelic journey through the home of one of the most brilliant writers of our time.
Officially, Sells's role was that of a personal assistant. Unofficially, she was a versatile and dedicated individual who tackled any task that needed to be done. One evening, Hunter beckoned Sells to his chair in the kitchen and said with a playful tone, "So, you claim to be a photographer. Well, Taschen is planning a book of my photographs, followed by a mocking 'Ha, Ha.' I didn't mind; Hunter was Hunter. A moment later, his expression shifted, and he appeared sheepish and remorseful for bullying his young assistant. He began to explain that almost his entire life had been documented, except for his home—the ramshackle, remarkable creative heartland known as Owl Farm. Hunter expressed the need to visually archive this unique space, and he entrusted Sells with the task of capturing its essence through photography if she so desired.
